Around 800 islands in Myanmar waters with almost no infrastructure, reached overland from Phuket to Ranong and cleared into Kawthaung.

The Mergui is what the Andaman Sea looked like before it was discovered: eight hundred islands, a handful of villages, no resorts on most of them and anchorages that see a few dozen yachts a year rather than a few dozen a day.

Getting there is the price. Charters do not sail from Phuket; guests transfer about four hours by road to Ranong on the Thai border, or fly by seaplane, and clear Myanmar immigration at Kawthaung. Cruising permits are issued in advance through the state travel agency and a government guide is aboard for the whole voyage.

The season is narrower than Thailand's, effectively December to March, and the permit paperwork runs two to three weeks ahead of departure.
