The shortest thing worth doing on a yacht from Phuket: twelve miles south to the clearest water within reach of the island, out and back in a day.
The Racha islands sit far enough off the Phuket coast to escape the inshore run-off, which is why the water there is a different colour and why the dive schools use it. Twelve miles from Chalong makes it the only genuinely clear water that fits inside a single day.
A day charter is the right way to test whether a longer charter is for you, and it is a fraction of the commitment: a crewed catamaran for a day runs in the low tens of thousands of baht rather than in dollars per week.
It is also the segment where the licensing question gets murky, because a large part of the Phuket day fleet operates on Thai-flagged boats under local rules rather than under the superyacht charter licence. That is legitimate, but it is a different regime, and it is worth knowing which one you are booking into.
Depart Chalong mid-morning, an hour to Racha Yai depending on the hull. Anchor in Ao Bungalow on the west side for swimming and snorkelling, lunch aboard, and back into Chalong before the afternoon sea breeze fills in.
The value of doing this route on a yacht rather than on a day boat is control over the clock and the tide. Most of it comes down to these.
Racha Yai works as a first or last night on almost any itinerary, and it is the standard answer when weather closes the crossing to Phi Phi. Racha Noi, four miles further south, has better diving and worse shelter, so the pattern is to dive Noi in the morning and sleep at Yai.
No two operators run an identical itinerary. The variant is the useful part: a shorter version has dropped a destination, and it is almost always the furthest one.
