The Similans are a different sea. Fifty-eight miles northwest of Phuket, out of the reach of the mainland run-off, nine granite islands sit in water that regularly gives thirty metres of visibility. The east sides are gentle coral gardens on white sand. The west sides are the famous ones: granite boulders the size of houses stacked into swim-throughs and arches.

The park is closed every year from 16 May to 14 October. That is not weather advice, it is a legal closure, and it is the single hardest constraint in Andaman Sea itinerary planning. Roughly five months of the year this destination does not exist.

Anchoring is prohibited on coral throughout the park. Yachts pick up park mooring buoys, and on a busy February night the buoys at the popular bays are all taken by early afternoon.
