Mu Ko Surin

The largest and healthiest shallow reef in Thai waters, plus a Moken sea-nomad village that still lives on the water in the channel.

The Surins are a hundred miles north of Phuket, close to the Myanmar border, and the reef there is the best shallow coral in Thailand. Not the boulder diving of the Similans but wide, living, shallow reef flats that snorkellers can work for hours.

The two main islands lie so close together that the channel between them is a natural harbour, and that is where yachts moor and where the Moken village sits. The Moken are sea nomads who have lived in the Andaman for centuries; the community here is one of the last that still spends much of the year on the water.

Like the Similans, the park closes from mid-May to mid-October.
