Ko Panyi

A Muslim fishing village of around 1,600 people built on stilts against a limestone cliff, with a mosque, a school and a floating football pitch.

Panyee was founded by Malay fishing families in the late eighteenth century and has been built out over the water ever since. There is no road and almost no land: the village stands on piles in the shallows under a vertical rock face.

The football pitch is the thing people remember. The village boys built it out of scrap timber over the water in the 1980s after watching the World Cup on television, and the team that grew out of it became one of the strongest youth sides in southern Thailand.

It is a working village, not an exhibit. The restaurants along the front are geared to the lunchtime tour boats, and the further you walk from the landing the more it is simply a place where people live.
