Railay and Phra Nang

Rai Le, Ao Phra Nang

A peninsula cut off from the mainland by limestone walls, reachable only by boat, and the birthplace of climbing in Southeast Asia.

Railay is attached to the Krabi mainland but there is no road in: vertical limestone seals it off on the land side, so everybody arrives by water. That accident of geography gave it two things, a set of beaches that stayed small, and around seven hundred bolted climbing routes on the walls above them.

Phra Nang beach at the southern tip is the one that appears on postcards, with a cave shrine at one end hung with offerings by local fishing families.

For a yacht this is the eastern turning point of a Phang Nga itinerary and a good place to spend a day doing something other than swimming.
